Horse racing: Mr. K pips General Salute

Mr K’s ambition to become the best horse in this year’s Accra Turf Club-organised competitions got a boost as the seven-year-old produced yet another heroic performance last Saturday to finish first in the Division 4B event of the first day of the October Race Meetings.

Ridden by Omar Sattout Stable’s top jockey, Joseph Lamptey, Mr K proved what a class act he is by beating seven other horses to claim superiority and the bragging right in the most competitive race of the day.

Running over a distance of 1,200 meters, Mr K and jockey Lamptey finished within an average time of 1.47 seconds (the fastest time ever recorded this year) ahead of contenders General Salute (Daniel Abekah) and Sea Bird (Dennis Kotey), who took the first and second runners-up respectively.

The Division 4C event, which was run over a distance of 1000 meters, had Coconut Grove Resort’s jockey Moses Amoah (Coconut Grover) shrug off competition from Illiasu Sulley (Shatter), S. T. Madu (Biscuit) and Mensah Ashong (Lagata) to finish first before a crowd of about 700.

Illiasu Sulley, who rode Shatter to finish second briefly threatened to draw level with Amoah in the final furlong but the Elmina-born challenger pulled away to win by two lengths.

Seven other horses lined up for honours in the Maidens division. They were Thunder Storm (Ebenezer Charway), Nine Eleven (Joseph Lamptey), Barikisu (Adjei Mensah Joshua), Ikaida (Benjamin Kotey), Mercedes (Jonathan Mensah), Larro (David Ahenakwah) and Simply Great ( R. Nettey).

At the end of the 1,200 meters race, Joseph Lamptey, who rode Nine Eleven, came tops followed by Thunder Storm and Barikisu.

In all, five races were run on the day, including the Division 4A and 3B events, which were won by Who Is Free (Charles Ampah) and Marie Cruz (Daniel Abekah) respectively.

The second day of the October Race Meetings continues on Saturday, October 22 at the same venue.
