What can Rawlings learn from Kufuor?

The war of attrition between the camps of Ghana’s former presidents Jerry Rawlings and J.A. Kufuor appears nowhere near an end as members of both sides continue to pour venom into the volatile relations.

A day after the New Patriotic Party rebuffed Rawlings’ corruption accusations against Kufuor, Mr. Kofi Adams, spokesman for Rawlings has returned fire, sending ripostes also to an earlier counsel by businessman Alhaji Asuma Banda for Rawlings to take after Kufuor’s self-conduct since leaving office.

Kofi Adams has doubts what at all it is that Rawlings has to learn from Kufuor. Adams queried his host on Asempa FM, Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong if Rawlings ought to learn how to conceal corruption in government because it can collapse a ruling government or how to buy chains to hang around our necks when the people are thirsty and should be provided potable water?

Rawlings and Kufuor have not been known publicly to be very good friends though, however as statesmen to have ascended the highest national thrones, the continued decay of whatever remains of their relations remains a national headache.

Rawlings had on Monday during the opening ceremony of the 2013 Volta Regional Youth Camp at the Adidome Senior High School in the Volta Region that there is need to help President John Mahama fight corruption, a canker he said had grown and gained notoriety during the rule of President Kufuor.

He said so deep seated was corruption at the time that the failure of the succeeding government led by the late Professor John Mills to immediately dismiss from office certain operatives of the Kufuor administration, led to the further festering of the canker and ultimately eroding the moral fabric of the society.

But the NPP said on Thursday that Rawlings has no moral right to criticize Kufuor given what wrongs, including persons who went unaccounted for, while he ruled the nation.

To that challenge Kofi Adams said Rawlings was spot on in condemning the corruption he said went on under Kufuor, for the attendant denial or diversion of state funds needed for development amounted to mass murder.
