UFP lauds Prez Mahama on Guantanamo prisoners
The United Front Party (UFP) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for taking that bold step in accepting the two Guantanamo Bay detainees into the country.

The gesture by the government, the UFP said, would go a long way to strengthen international relations of the country with the rest of the world, especially the United States of America.
In a communique signed by the National Chairman of UFP, Nana Dr Agyenim Boaten, on the party’s position on the Guantanamo Bay detainees in Ghana, the UFP noted with concern the national discourse in media circles on Ghana’s acceptance of the two Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Security Agencies
The security agencies in the country, the UFP believed, had established a benchmark of superstardom in security and its related issues, especially before, during and after elections that had attracted the confidence of the good people of Ghana.
“It is this same confidence that the people of Ghana need to repose in the Ghana Police Service (GPS); the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF); the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the National Security now that these detainees have come our way,” the statement added.
As political party that shared the sentiment of many commentators, the communique stated the security threat that the presence of these detainees posed, but stated that there was also the need to still have confidence and support for our security agencies to keep an eye on them.
“Though the presence of the duo is frightening, it is also important that as a people we praise President John Dramani Mahama for taking that bold step to uphold the rights of the two,” the statement explained.
Invisible forces
On the other hand, the UFP believed the Invisible Forces (IF) of a sister opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), were more treacherous and posed a threat to security than those two detainees who were to live in Ghana for two years to correct their wrong.
On that score, the UFP drew the attention of the Christian Council of Ghana; the National Peace Council and others in the country to also show concern or brood over the activities of these IF rather than those two detainees who were under security monitoring.
“The UFP would recall with disgust, the skirmishes that these forces mounted on the suspended General Secretary of NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, in 2015,” it stated.
The party, therefore, called on all commentators and other political parties to be objective in their discourse.
