STAR-Ghana supports national peace interventions with $400,000

STAR-Ghana, the multi-donor pooled funding organisation has announced support for nationwide interventions towards enhancing national cohesion and preventing violence in the wake of the forthcoming Supreme Court ruling on the election petition.

A statement issued in Accra said the support for selected Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the National Commission on Civic Education’s peace-targeted initiatives forms part of STAR-Ghana’s efforts to depeen  Ghana’s democratic governance and promote peace and national unity.

STAR-Ghana supported 51 CSO’s and media organisations during the 2012 General Elections to implement actions aimed at contributing to a  peaceful, credible and inclusive general election and transition to the next government.

Following the challenge to the results of the 2012 Presidential elections, it decided to explore opportunities for programme support to CSOs and media Organisations to help prevent any potential negative fall-outs from the adjudication process.  

According to the Programme Manager of STAR-Ghana, Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu, the intervention, which will last for a period of three months from July to September 2013 at a total budget of $400,000, is to complement the efforts of state institutions and other stakeholders at promoting peace in Ghana.

Grantees under this special intervention are:

1. Faith-Based Organisations:

a- The National Catholic Secretariat;
b- Christian Council of Ghana;
c- Office of National Chief Imam; and
d- Ghana Pentecostal Council

2. National Comission on Civic Education

3. Northern Ghana-based CSOs (focusing on early warning and conflict prevention)

a- West Africa Network for Peace Building – Ghana WANEP (Ghana);
b- Northern Ghana Aid ( NOGAID)
c- Centre for Alternative Development (CENFAD);
d- Youth Alive; and
e- Ghana Developing Communities Association(GDCA)

4. Media Organisations (who are supported to promote discourse, public education and ensure the professional conduct of media organisations during the period):

a- Ghana Independent Broadcasters’ Association (GIBA);
b- Citi FM;
c- Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC);
d- Radio Gold;
e- Multimedia group;  and
f- Media Foundation for West (MFWA).

STAR-Ghana is a multi-donor pooled funding mechanism (Funded by DFID, DANIDA, EU and USAID) to increase the influence of civil society and Parliament in the governance of public goods and service delivery, with the ultimate goal of improving the accountability and responsiveness of Ghana’s government, traditional authorities and the private sector.
