Police commended for conduct during AFAG Demonstration

Peace Watch Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has commended the general conduct and the manner in which the police personnel controlled the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) demonstration  on Wednesday, last week.

It praised the police for controlling the demonstrators when they veered off the proposed routes agreed between AFAG and them.

Peace Watch Ghana lauded the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Alhassan, and  the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for the professional and mature leadership  they exhibited during the demonstration.

“It has to be recalled that there have been instances in the past when such acts had led to violent clashes between demonstrators and the police, resulting in some injuries,” Peace Watch Ghana said in a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Ms Diana Nyankopa Daniels.

The NGO also commended the leadership of AFAG for rendering an unqualified apology to the police.

“This amply demonstrates the level to which our democracy has developed.”

Police caution AFAG

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the leadership of AFAG to desist from violating terms agreed on with the police in subsequent demonstrations.

At a press conference, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno said the police “takes a serious view to the behaviour displayed during the AFAG demonstration.”

He said the Regional Police Command had decided not to pursue the issue further as it had earlier indicated, “considering the fact that the police have a good working relationship with AFAG as far as demonstrations in Accra are concerned and the fact that the group has formally rendered an unqualified apology to the police.”

He entreated all identifiable groups and individuals who intended to embark on demonstrations in the future to comply with all agreements with the police, “as deviation from such terms will not be countenanced.”
