Parties, leaders eulogise Kofi Annan

A number of political leaders and parties in the country have described the death of the former United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, as a great loss to the nation and the global community.

Eulogising the revered global statesman, after his death was reported early on Saturday, they were of the view that Mr Annan’s global prowess opened doors for the well being of the country.

Big blow

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) described his death as a “big blow” to Ghana and the world.

According to the party, Kofi Annan’s life and work on peace and justice positively impacted the world and individuals.

The chairman of the party, Professor Edmund Delle, said: “Globally we have lost a great, wonderful man of peace and principles, whose works transformed and contributed to global peace.”

“The leadership of Mr Annan as the UN Secretary-General raised the profile of the global body, created numerous platforms for peace and deepened the democratic pillars across the globe,” he added.

Prof. Delle, on behalf of the CPP, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family and people of Ghana, adding “may his death be marked with peace and a sense of togetherness”.

The CPP Chairman said the late Annan had an enduring legacy which all must be proud of.

“Kofi was a man of peace, who never gave up his identity as a Ghanaian and African. We must project our identity across the globe. May his soul rest in peace.”

Dignified life

Oh, how the mighty and exemplary are falling at the centre of the earth, twice independent presidential candidate in the 2016 and 2012 elections, Mr Jacob Osei Yeboah, also described his death as the saddest but dignified life to humanity.

My heartfelt condolences to the World, the UN and especially Ghanaians and more especially to his immediate family, he stated.

According to Mr Yeboah, “the April 1938 Octogenarian, Kofi Annan, was born in Ghana to be a son of the world.

“He has impeccable stance for peace and diplomacy and he devoted most of his life to serve and better the life of humanity worldwide.”

Especially, he said that Mr Annan lit the minutest beacon flame of hope in the darkness of ignorance on the African continent about good governance and geopolitics.

His last words to Africa was instructive and quite phenomenal, thrusting through the heart for contemplation and debate at the World's Changers Summit in Namibia. He stated, "Africa has great values to depend upon, Africa could be independent but we have too many old men at the presidency, some are above 70 years, and what do you expect them to do?

The World has indeed lost a gem of transformational leadership, he added.

“May his diplomatic soul rest in peace as he crosses the dark veil curtain at the horizon of life in yonder. RIP Busumuru. Adieu Dr Kofi Annan”, Mr Yeboah concluded.

NDC and GCPP

From their official Twitter page, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said “Our nation has lost her foremost diplomat. Simple yet elegant, Kofi Annan represented the finest in diplomacy,” the statement added.

It stated that he dedicated his life to the pursuit of world peace and he was an inspiration for many people, especially people of African descent.

The leader of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr Henry Lartey, said Ghana and the world was shocked and saddened by the death of Kofi Annan,.

He stated that the pursuit of peace and sustainable development in the whole wide world was his legacy and concluded that his soul rest in perfect peace.
