‘Operation Eagle Eye’ causes tension in Volta Region

The surveillance strategy, ‘Operation Eagle Eye’, employed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to weed out Togolese from participating in the upcoming elections is generating tension in the Volta Region.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the ‘crude strategy’ was part of a grand scheme outlined in an operational document it had intercepted meant to cause mayhem in the region during the election.

Briefing the media, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Koku Anyidoho, said the document had exposed the extreme forms of ‘animalistic conduct’ of the NPP in the region, stating, ‘We Voltarians will not allow them to take us for ransom.’

‘This document exposes the NPP’s tacit admission that it has no chance of getting significant votes in the Volta Region; yet their plan is to create confusion to reduce the votes of the NDC in this region.’

Leaked document

Reading portions of the said 22-page document titled ‘Bridging the Volta and the NPP Gap’, Mr Anyidoho indicated that the NPP, among others, had decided ‘to engage street boys to fire some bamboo guns early in the morning in the bush at vantage points on the D-Day to cause some scare, as well as put some fear’ in citizens in the border villages from voting.’

Before then, a gong-gong is to be beaten by the chiefs along all the border villages to caution their subjects against coming to Ghana to vote, Mr Anyidoho further said.

In addition, he said the NPP, as indicated in the document, was going to dole out one cedi to voters in the remote areas as a form of inducement to get their votes.

‘We cannot be taken for granted and we will not allow anybody to disturb the good image of the region,’ he stated.

According to him, the document had been leaked to the NDC by some members of the NPP who were unhappy about the way their leaders were planning to throw the region into a state of anarchy.

Togo is NPP Target

Mr Anyidoho questioned why Ghanaians in Togo had become a target of the NPP and were, therefore, going all out to stop them from exercising their franchise.

‘If Ghanaians in Europe and America can come home and vote; why should our brethren in Togo not be allowed to come home and vote?’ he further asked.

The deputy NDC general secretary accused the former Volta Regional Minister, Mr Peter Amewu;  a personal aide to the flag bearer of the NPP, Mr Kofi Dzamesi;  and Mr Pius Hadzide of orchestrating the plot.

Meanwhile, the NPP has debunked the said allegation, describing it as a cheap propaganda tool the NDC wanted to use to deceive Voltarians.

‘This is just a panic reaction. We have no idea of such a document. It is not coming from our quarters,’ the NPP Regional Secretary, Mr Joseph Homenya, told the Daily Graphic.
