The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has conferred on the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the statesman of the decade award, the highest award of the students of Ghana in the 47-year history of NUGS.
The award was in recognition of the enviable role played by Nana Akufo-Addo in the democratic dispensation of this country and to recognise his responsibility to conscientise the nation on the virtues of productive citizenry.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by the President and General Secretary respectively of NUGS, Andrews Kofi Gyan and Louisa Ata-Agyemang, said the Ghanaian students actively witnessed the height of the test of the Ghanaian Judicial Service with the recent election petition brought forward by Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to the statement, the petition exposed enormously the inequities in the electoral process which might have affected the individual and collective will of the Ghanaian people at the polls.
The statement said the petition also provided a sustainable framework to settle disputes involving presidential elections in Ghana.
The statement noted that the then presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, resisted the character assassination by his political detractors and with stoicism, he demonstrated his intense affinity to the democracy he fought for during the dictatorial era of coup d’états and finally, his selfless contribution to the promulgation of the 1992 constitutional democratic process.
The statement further said that Nana Akufo-Addo accepted the judgement of the Supreme Court in good faith and encouraged the Ghanaian people to endeavour to follow a path that would build the nation positively.
The statement called on Ghanaians to join them on October 11 at Erata Hotel in Accra to confer on Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the highest award of the students of Ghana in its 47-year history.
The statement expressed the hope that “there is more for him to contribute to the Ghanaian people and the coming years offer enough avenue for him to contribute his quota in the development and governance of Ghana.’’
The statement concluded by calling on the government to relinquish the burden imposed on students by the recent rise in utility prices and also water, especially at the time when the economy seemed to be in a bad shape.
“We therefore endorse the demonstration of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) to drum home the demand in cutting these unfavourable prices hikes”, the statement emphasised.
