It, therefore, urged workers from all sectors of the economy, particularly in organised labour, to remain steadfast in working towards the collective interest of the country.

 Fulfilling all promises

The leadership of the country expressed appreciation to all workers in the country for their continuous contribution towards Ghana’s development over the years.

The statement also reiterated the commitment of leadership to fulfil all promises made to the people of Ghana to ensure the growth of Ghanaian workforce and the development of the future of Ghanaian children.

‘’As we celebrate workers worldwide, the NPP salutes all Ghanaian workers, both in the formal and informal sectors.

‘’We are proud of your hard work and patriotic contribution towards Ghana’s development over the years,’’ the  statement declared.

According to the statement,  this year’s celebration came at a time when  President Nana Akufo-Addo was spearheading economic transformation.

Economy is stabilising

‘’Currently, our currency is growing in strength and the economy is stabilising. To lessen the burden of the Ghanaian worker, the Akufo-Addo government, in less than four months in office, has implemented a number of policies which include abolishing levies imposed on ‘kayayei’ by local authorities; abolishing  levies imposed on religious institutions by local authorities; abolishing the one per cent Special Import Levy, as well as initiating  the process to abolish duties on the importation of spare parts  and reducing National Electrification Scheme Levy from five per cent to three per cent which are aimed at alleviating the suffering of ordinary people,’’ the statement said.

Providing jobs

According to the statement, the NPP-led government has not reneged on its promise of providing jobs.

“Already, steps to create jobs have been implemented and there is approval to employ 11,000 health trainees who graduated between 2012 and 2016.”

On the stimulus package for industry, the statement said, the government had allocated GH¢220 million to support distressed but viable companies around the country, while 1,200 agricultural extension officers had been hired and trained nationwide to support the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

‘’As we commemorate May Day, it is the hope of the NPP that workers across the country will take stock of the past few years and work tirelessly towards achieving economic progress and strengthening our democracy,’’  the statement concluded.
