NPP supporters attack Kwabena Agyepong

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) yesterday attacked the General Secretary of the party, Mr Kwabena Agyepong, at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra.

Although the supporters did not physically assault Mr Agyepong, they broke a portion of the rear windscreen of the four-wheel drive vehicle that was taking him out of the party’s headquarters.

As soon as Mr Agyepong entered his vehicle around 2:30 p.m., the supporters, most of them in black Polo shirts, surrounded the vehicle and banged it continuously.

Even when the security guards managed to open the gate for the general secretary, the angry supporters, who had waited for the ‘chance’ for more than three hours, would not allow his vehicle to drive through.

After some struggle, the driver succeeded in manoeuvring his way through the supporters and sped off.

The Daily Graphic reporter overheard some of the supporters say that their attack on Mr Agyepong was to send a signal to him that they did not want to see him at the NPP headquarters again.

They claimed that Mr Agyepong and the suspended National Chairman of the party, Mr Paul Afoko, were in league to scuttle Nana Akufo-Addo’s chance of winning the 2016 presidential election.

Some minutes after the incident, the police, led by the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, emerged at the NPP headquarters to maintain order.

Accusations
The supporters accused Mr Agyepong of bringing an injunction to serve on the party’s National Steering Committee, which was scheduled to have a meeting.

They suspected that the injunction was in respect of the three party members who had taken the party to court over Mr Afoko’s suspension.

Information about the injunction was sketchy because some insiders claimed that it was the earlier one that Mr Afoko had secured in respect of last Friday’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party.

Sources close to the meeting told the Daily Graphic that as soon as Mr Agyepong had presented the injunction to the members of the steering committee, he retired to his office.

A Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Mr Obiri Yeboah, sent word to journalists that the meeting had gone on successfully but indicated that he would not comment on the details of the meeting.

Speaking with journalists later, the Director of Elections for NPP, Mr Martin Adjei Mensah, confirmed that the National Steering Committee meeting had taken place, an indication that the injunction was not a current one.

The NEC of the NPP suspended Mr Afoko indefinitely last Friday. The Disciplinary Committee had made the recommendation after the National Council of Elders had, in September, petitioned it, demanding, among other things, that Mr Afoko be made to step aside until after the 2016 elections.
