NPP seeks UK’s support on new voters register

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has underscored the need for the United Kingdom (UK) to support Ghana’s electoral reforms and the NPP’s call for a new voters register as the current register’s credibility has been called to question.

Separate meetings

At separate meetings with the Rt. Hon. Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State International Development, and Hon. Geoffrey Clinfton-Brown MP, the outgoing Chairman of the Conservative Party International Office, Mr Agyepong stressed that his party had uncovered various discrepancies such as double registration, registration of minors and the inclusion of foreigners from neighbouring countries in Ghana’s voters register.

He noted that the evidence adduced by the NPP, which had been given to the Electoral Commission of Ghana, was compelling and of monumental proportions.

He also called on the international community to help enhance democracy in Ghana by ensuring that the 2016 general election was conducted in a free, fair and credible manner to protect the true and valid will of the people.

The two top government officials in the UK, for their part, thanked Mr Agyepong for his visit and assured him of their continued support towards the progress of Ghana in terms of her development agenda and vibrant democracy.

They stressed that the partnership that had existed between the two countries had been one that had proved useful, and therefore they were looking forward to deepening their relationship for the benefit of both countries.
