NPP's Amasaman primary suspended after court injunction

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries elections at the Amasaman Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has been called off.

The suspension is due to a court injunction placed on the elections by Rockson Adu Boahen, one of the aspirants.

According to the constituency chairman of the party, Michael Ofori Asante the elections was suspended on the orders of the party’s Director of Elections in the constituency.

“[The election in Amasaman] is not happening because one of the aspirants who was disqualified has placed an interlocutory injunction on the election… Earlier, a copy of the injuction was placed at the regional office and somebody signed on behalf of the regional chairman. I had a call from the National Director of Elections that we should hold on with the elections,” he told the press.

The court is expected to hear the case on October 11, 2019.

Meanwhile one of the aspirants, Clement Wilkison urged his supporters to stay at the polling centre until 3 pm when elections are expected to end.

“We are going to vote today. I want you to pick your phone, call your people who are not yet here to come and vote. We haven’t heard anything from the national office,” he told supporters.

The Electoral Commission also said it has not been served notice of an injunction.

But police intend to ensure the election is put on hold following the injunction,

The Amasaman District Police Commander Supt. Fredrick Kojo Asare Mensah said his officers will be stationed at the centre to ensure order amid some agitaiton from Clement Wilkinson’s supporters.

“We didn’t know there was an injunction but now that we know there is an injunction, people are taking it calmly… we are putting our security measures in place to make sure nothing untoward will happen,” he said.
