NPP elects new Chairman for Western Region

A total of 451 delegates from the 26 constituencies in the Western Region, participated in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Regional Executive Committee Elections held at the auditorium of the Takoradi Polytechnic (T-Poly), where Mr. Kofi Atta Dickson Nketia, aka Kendicks, dethroned the incumbent regional chairman Nana Owusu Ankomah in the race.

The 55-year-old pharmaceutical company Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in Takoradi polled 285 votes as against 124 secured by Nana Ankoma, with Mr. Joseph E. Payne, the third contender, obtaining 41 of the ballots, conducted by the regional office of the Electoral Commission (EC) led by its director Mr. Stephen Opoku Mensah.

In all, 32 candidates vied for the positions of chairman, First and Second vice chairman, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, organizer, women organizer, youth organizer and Nasara coordinator.

Those who participated in the voting process included members of the regional executives committee, Members of Parliament (MP) from the region, Members of the Various Constituency Executive Committees, a representative of the National Council of the Party, Council of Elders, Council of Patrons, and Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON).

For the position of First vice chairman, Mr. Benjamin Kwaw secured 184 votes to defeat his opponents, Messrs Frank Eti and Kojo Acquah who obtained 172 and 95 votes respectively, while in the Second vice chairmanship race Mr. Francis Ndede Siah got 238 of the ballots as against 213 obtained by Kojo Boakye Yiadom.

For the position of secretary, Mr. Charles Bissue obtained 240 votes to edged out Mr. K. K Sam who had 128 of the ballots and Okatakyie Amankwah Afrifa, collecting 83 votes and in the assistant secretary election, Samuel Kofi Abiaw got 147 votes, Asiedu Kokuro 92, Ken Woode 66, Kobinah Kwansah 64 , Ishmael Bravo 60 and Ada Yankey 32.

Madam Jane Edna Nyame secured 177 votes to defeat Nana Kwesi Ansah and Kwame Armah Aidoo who received 137 votes each, while for the position of organizer, Abdul M. Ganiyu posted 173 votes to beat Kwame Kintorh who had 161 votes, Sylvester E. Yidana who had 63, Jerry Hanson 45 and Kofi Asaa Narkaah Bosco, nine votes.

For the position of Women Organizer, Ms Golly Antwi Boasiako had 325 of the ballots to beat Abena Kwallah, 102 while Adwoa Nyakor maned with 21 votes, while in the youth organizer contest, Yaw Amoabeng Acheampong obtained 272 votes to beat Kojo Acquah who got 179 of the ballots and in the Nasara coordinator post, Onasis Abubakar Mohammed, secured 235 votes to defeat Issah Mohammed Rabiw who had 215.

In a short post-election address, Nana Ankomah conceded defeat wholeheartedly, noting that “what is important is that in 2016 NPP comes to power because it is one group willing to secure power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”

He gave the assurance that he would assist the new executives in their quest to work hard for the NPP to return to power, adding that, he would initiate his own programmes and strategies to assist the newly elected executives.

On his part, Mr. Nketiah indicated that there was no winner and loser in the election, and that what was important was for all members of the party to unite and rally solidly behind the new committee members, who were sworn in by the regional leader of the legal team, Mr. Ben Ackaah Gyasi, towards a resounding victory in 2016.

Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion, which was under tight police watch, were the former speaker of parliament in the Kufuor administration, Mr. Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Hughes, the former 1st deputy speaker, Mr. Freddie Blay and Mr. A E Amoah, the former Western Regional Minister as well as previous ministers of state and MP.
