NPP cannot pass accountability test — NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot pass the accountability test when they leave office.

That, it explained, was the motivation of the NPP to break the eight-year chain.

“Most of all, their wish is that in 2024, Ghanaians will give them another opportunity to cover up their bad deeds and continue to dim the torch of accountability while further enriching themselves and impoverishing the Ghanaian people,” the National Communications Officer of the party, Mr Sammy Gyamfi said at a press conference in Accra yesterday.

Corruption and hostility

According to him, Ghanaians were well awake and had seen the incompetence and dishonesty of the NPP.

He said the NPP had failed to hold its functionaries in government to account for alleged corrupt deals.

Mr Gyamfi said instead of prosecuting such officials and retrieving the funds, the government was rather shielding such individuals.

Coupled with such acts, he said was the extreme level of intolerance and heavy-handedness towards independent anti-corruption institutions and office holders, as well as civil society activists who had dared to hold the government to accountability.

For instance, he said the removal of the former Auditor-General, Mr Daniel Yaw Domelovo from office was clear retaliation for surcharging the then Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, for his role in the Kroll Scandal.

Shady deals

Mr Gyamfi also alleged that the government was profiting from the COVID-19 pandemic, saying state funds allocated for the country’s fight against the pandemic were being misappropriated.

“You are all aware of how recently the Ministers of Health and Finance violated the Public Procurement Act and the Pubic Financial Management Act in the procurement of 3.4 million doses of the overpriced Sputnik V Vaccine.

In spite of the several calls by Ghanaians to sack the ministers involved, Mr Gyamfi noted that both of them continued to remain at post.

Mr Gyamfi said the NDC was confident that come 2024, all well-meaning Ghanaians would join forces with the NDC to break the eight years of broken promises, injustice and intolerance.
