New voter registration exercise for 2020 polls to start late June - John Boadu

The Electoral Commission will embark on the new voters' registration exercise from late June 2020 to July 2020, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu has hinted.

He told journalists about the development when he emerged from an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

The only item on the agenda at the meeting, which was divided into two groups of eight political parties, was an update on the 2020 registration exercise.

The meeting was divided into two sessions to allow for the observance of physical distancing as a result of the coronavirus disease.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) decided to boycott the meeting whilst the representative of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) also walked out of the meeting some minutes after entering.

When he emerged from the first session of meeting which discussed the impending registration of voters, Mr Boadu said, "they've slated it by end of June, you understand and very soon, per the law, 21 days to any national exercise, they need to inform us, so the specific date will be given to us in the course of time.

"Which means that it will take almost 40 days so they will be finishing by end of July as well. Just as you know, the registration will be divided into clusters, five cluster per phase, and each phase will take six days and they will use one day to mobilise and move their materials from one phase to the other."

"At the end of phase five, they will use one additional day to prepare themselves for a mop up that will also take about three days to mop up those who were unable to register during the period alorted to them," Mr Boadu said.

The Electoral Commission is expected to officially communicate the outcome of the meeting after the second session.
