The communities are Nima-Mamobi and Alajo Polo Park. The items included rice, maize, buckets, plates, cups, wastebins, mosquito nets, mattresses and some used clothing.

The presentation was intended to bring some relief to the victims as they recovered from the disaster.
On Wednesday, June 3, 2015, some parts of Accra were submerged in water following a downpour in the capital with the resultant flooding claiming 159 lives.

Many of the people died from an inferno at the GOIL Filling Station near the GCB Towers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle where they had sought refuge to escape the flood waters spreading out from the overflowing Odaw River and uncovered drains.

Nima-Maamobi

At Nima-Mamobi, Hajia Mahama, who was supported by the various women’s organisers of the NDC across the country, called on all women to join the campaign of promoting good waste management practices in the country. She said as women constituted more than 50 per cent of the population and were also involved in various activities that produced waste including household chores, it was important for them to make sanitation management a priority in their endeavours.

“We should make sure that the rubbish is disposed of properly, make sure we put it at a place where we can collect it, and stop dumping it into our gutters and water bodies, which could cause flooding when it rains”, she said.
She, however, expressed the hope that the items would be distributed accordingly to support the victims of the flood.

‘Stop dumping refuse into drains’

Receiving the items, the Assembly member for Nima - West , Alhaji Umar Sanda Mohammed, lauded the effort of the women’s wing of the party in supporting the victims.

He said the items would be distributed to the victims and expressed the hope that other individuals and benevolent organisations would come to the aid of the victims.
He also encouraged the residents to desist from dumping waste into open drains as that was one of the main causes of flooding in the country.

Alajo Polo Park

At Alajo Polo Park, Hajia Mahama said the flood was one of the most disturbing occurrences in the history of Ghana and that the people who had been affected needed all the necessary support.

Therefore, she said, it was time for Ghanaians to show that they were one people who lived in unity and harmony, regardless of political affiliations and called on everyone to help the victims in every way possible.

“This is an opportune time for us as Ghanaians to show our support to each other. This is a national issue which has caused the nation a lot and, therefore, we have to put our political differences aside and support them in whichever way possible,” she said.
