NDC group defects to NDP

A former First Lady and leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has welcomed a group of defected National Democratic Congress (NDC) members into her party and charged them to join the campaign against the NDC.

She told members of the group that the light they had seen in the NDP was the evidence of a near-collapsing ruling NDC where President Mahama had failed to take Ghana to the desired heights.

Some 200 members of the NDC in the Afigya Kwabre South Constituency in the Ashanti Region last Sunday officially defected to the NDP and were  introduced to the national officers of the NDP.

Nana Konadu told the gathering that not only had the NDC failed to perform in the education, health and roads, among other sectors, but also high level corruption continued to stare Ghanaians in the face.

She recalled that after messing up with the Savanna Accelerated Development Agency (SADA), STX housing deal, one time premium for National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), among other failures, the NDC had resorted to over-taxation.

“It is very worrying that in such a economic hardship, the government and I mean the ruling NDC continues to prick the instincts of Ghanaians by incessant hikes in fuel. The over-taxation needs to stop. No country benefits from over-taxation,” she stated.

She described President John Mahama’s “Changing Lives” a waste of state resources and called on Ghanaians to resort to change, adding that the element of change gave proper interpretation of multi-party democracy.

Inaugural ceremony

At the inaugural ceremony at Atimatim where the NDP officially received the defected group in the full glare of the public, the leader of the group, Nana Adu Asare, told the gathering the defected members were no more happy with the happenings in the NDC.

He said they had been in the NDC all these years because of former President J.J. Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ penchant to fight corruption and their stand on the probity and accountability philosophy.

He said they had observed that President Mahama, who is also the flag bearer of the NDC, had been mismanaging the affairs of the state while failing in his fight against corruption.

He said having found the ideology and philosophy of the NDP worthy, they deemed it necessary to associate themselves with no other political party but the NDP.

The group said they renounced their membership and loyalty to NDC in December 2015.

Mpobi Zongo Chief

The Mpobi Zongo Chief, Alhaji Salifu Mumuni, said he and his team from the Zongo had joined the NDP following their dissatisfaction with the underdevelopment in Zongo communities in the constituency.
