Let unity, welfare of NPP be paramount — Akufo-Addo

Nana Akufo-AddoThe Flagbearer of New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 elections, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged the rank and file of the party to let the unity and welfare of the party to be  paramount in all their undertakings.

He explained that the success of the party in playing its role as the custodian of democracy,  rule of law, an open and  free society in Ghana was as a result of the unity in the party.

Nana Akufo-Addo said the party, which traced its  source to the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition,  had been able to’’ break historical tradition’’ because of  its internal unity and democracy.

He explained that it was through the instrumentality of their founding fathers that the country was able to break  the stronghold of one party state in the country to be replaced with multi-party system.

He said the leadership of the party did not want to drag the election petition any further, hence they all agreed to accept the judgement without seeking a review as a mark of people  who were committed to the rule of law.

He said the party, since its inception in 1947 by the founding fathers, had faced mountains of challenges but had managed to surmount all the obstacles and emerged triumphant the same way as it had emerged solidly united after the judgement of the Supreme Court.

The flag bearer said after six years of active participation in flag-bearer activities and presidential elections, he would like to take a rest and  reflect on issues.

He said his reflections would not be a disregard for the message from the Central regional party executive to him but it would be part of his reflections.

Nana Akufo-Addo, however, said whether he took a back seat or a front one in the party, his commitment to the party and  its unity would still be on the highest plane.

Earlier, Mr Ekow Danquah-Smith, the Central Regional Chairman of NPP, appealed to the flag bearer  not to abandon the party,

He said the Central regional executive had come to commend him for his courage  and wisdom in handling the party issues during the petition hearing  and after the Supreme Court  judgement.

He further explained that the Central Regional Executive had resolved to repose their confidence in him to lead the party in the 2016 presidential election to victory

The regional chairman said Nana Akufo-Addo had been destined to become the President of Ghana and no amount of machinations from human beings could stop him from attaining that destiny.

Mr Danquah-Smith said they could not wait for him to take his leave but had come to proclaim him as their flag bearer before he proceeded on his leave so that he would take their choice into consideration while taking his rest.
