The Member of Parliament for Keta, Mr Richard Quashigah, has appealed for the provision of potable water to three communities in his constituency which have not enjoyed good drinking water for the past seven years.

The only borehole that served Anyako, Konu and Seva, according to the MP, broke down seven years ago, compelling residents to depend on unsafe sources of water.

Mr Quashigah, who was contributing to the debate to approve the 2014 Budget estimate for the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, said even though he had made consistent appeals to both the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the ministry, his appeals had not been heeded to.

“I have been compelled to raise the matter on the floor of Parliament so that my concern will be taken on board before the 2014 Appropriation Bill is passed,” he said.

Mr Quashigah said but for the personal intervention of the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, the Anyako Senior High School would have been closed down as a result of lack of water.

He explained that the minister personally intervened by organising water tankers from his own resources to provide water for the school and expressed his appreciation for the gesture.

Mr Quashigah stressed the need for more funds to be allocated to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing because of its enormous responsibilities towards the provision of potable water, among other things.

He expressed his disappointment at the small amount of money that was allocated to the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and expressed the hope that the Ministry, of Finance would top up the amount in the course of next year.

Parliament approved GH¢531,389,023 for the ministry which fell less than what it proposed for its operations in 2014.

That notwithstanding, Mr Quashigah commended the government for providing potable water for several communities across the country and expressed the hope that Anyako and its environs would be considered next year.
