I’ll be MP for all — William Dowokpor

The Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Mr William Dowokpor, has assured the electorate that he will pay attention to the needs of the constituency when elected as Member of Parliament (MP) in the December 2016 election.

Mr Dowokpor gave the assurance at the launch of his campaign at the weekend at the University of Ghana, Legon. He said the constituency had more human, infrastructural and financial resources than any constituency in the country, but was experiencing stagnation and retrogression in some areas as a result of poor political leadership at the executive and legislative realms of government.

Change

On the theme “Change is Coming, Get Involved”, the PPP candidate said the constituency would experience reliable utility and public services, security for life and property and jobs for the youth under his leadership. “I will revive the Residents’ Associations that are currently in comatose and organise them into active community interest groups that will engage the city authorities on a daily basis to ensure that public services due them in the constituency are delivered,” he said.

Reforms

As a legislator, Mr Dowokpor said, his focus would be on the three key constitutional reforms that would make government work in the interest of the people of Ghana. “As your MP, I will push for the reforms that will allow you to elect the Mayor of Accra. I will advocate for amendment to the Constitution, to separate the executive from the legislature as a way of strengthening Parliament which is currently weak and under the control of the executive; and I will advocate for the establishment of the office of the Independent Public Prosecutor (IPP) to replace the current office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice who is under the firm control of the executive and, therefore, disabled to fight corruption without fear or favour.”

Security

On the security challenges facing students of the University of Ghana, Mr Dowokpor said he would engage the Police Service on the need to augment the university’s security apparatus with more men and patrols to deal with the security threats on campus. As regards the amount of money offered students under the students’ loan scheme, the PPP candidate said he had commissioned a study into how much would be adequate to cater for the basic needs of students, and revealed that the amount needed to be increased by at least 200 per cent to make any meaningful impact in the lives of students who relied on it.

“I understand the government and the loans trust people are afraid to give you more because they are not sure you will get any jobs after school to pay back the loans. That is an indictment on government, isn’t it?’ he queried.
