He said he has never owed allegiance to any other country apart from Ghana and dared those making the allegations to provide evidence to the contrary.

Addressing a press conference in Kumasi on Tuesday, the parliamentary aspirant said he has an American permanent residence permit "but I don't hold a dual citizenship."

He said he was aware of what happened to the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mr Adamu Sakande, who was incarcerated for not denouncing his British citizenship on time before contesting and becoming an MP and would therefore not do same.

He said he has been nurturing the ambition to become an MP since 1994 and as such was fully aware of the requirements.

"I will not do anything to jeopardise my own ambition," he stated.

He backed his claims with printed copies of all his passports and resident permit which were collated on a board for public viewing.

Rumours had been rife in Kumasi that Mr Aboagye held dual citizenship of Ghana and the United States of America (USA).

Following this, the sitting MP, Mr Henry Kwabena Kokofu who lost the primary to Mr Aboagye decided to contest the seat as an independent candidate.

Mr Kokofu has since rescinded his decision to go independent.
