Group recommends changes to Presidential Transition Act

The communique recommended that the question of how to reconcile the provisions of the Presidential (Transition) Act regarding the swearing-in of Members of Parliament and election of the Speaker of Parliament with the Constitution be carefully thought through and suggestions provided for consideration by Parliament.  

Regarding the Presidential Transition Team, it stated that a time frame for the Presidential Transition Team’s functions should be prescribed in the Presidential (Transition) Act.

“That membership of the Presidential Transition Team is broadened to include key stakeholders, including faith-based organisations, civil society representatives and the National Media Commission, as well as a wider range of political parties than currently pertains,” it said.

The communique recommended that a cap be placed on the number of transition team members and committees and suggested that a cap be prescribed on the budgeted amount to be used for the functions of the Presidential Transition Team.

It recommended that the provisions of the Presidential (Transition) Act should acknowledge other public offices and institutions that also undergo transition from one administration to another.
