As part of the Graphic Communications Group Limited’s (GCGL’s) coverage of the 2016 election campaigns, representatives of six political parties and the only independent presidential candidate contesting this year’s presidential elections will take turns to sell their messages to voters, as well as pledge to embark on a peaceful electioneering.

The Accra meeting is the fifth in the series of town hall meetings organised by the GCGL, which is on the theme: “Good Governance, Key to Development and Growth in Ghana,” to deepen and consolidate multi-party democracy in the country.

The Daily Graphic Town Hall meeting is an election-year platform that brings political parties face-to-face with the voters, where the parties give their policy proposals while the voters also seek clarification.

The parties participating in the one-day event are the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the representative of Mr Jacob Osei Yeboah, the independent presidential candidate.

For the Accra version, the seven representatives will speak on five thematic areas, namely infrastructure, energy, job creation, agriculture and education.

Launch of webpage

At the event, the GCGL will also unveil a unique election webpage which signals the company’s readiness for election 2016.

The webpage will provide historic election results, maps that provide ready constituency results, the means to track skirt and blouse voting and battlegrounds for the 2016 election.

The event will be streamed live on the Graphic facebook page.

Town Hall events

Already, four town hall events had been held in Bolgatanga, Sunyani, Koforidua and Cape Coast in the Upper East, Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Central regions in the last three months.

As part of the four events already organised by the GCGL, there have been radio discussion on various FM stations where the Director of Newspapers, Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh; the Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Ransford Tetteh, and the Political Editor, Mr Kobby Asmah, have thrown light on the event.

At the various meetings, officials from the Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education and the police service have also provided clarification on the election management process.

The occasion also brings together other stakeholders, including some civil society organisations, traditional authorities, religious communities and the academia.

Discussants

The Graphic Town Hall meetings, which are aimed at giving political parties the platform to pledge peace and sell their messages, also discusses some of the major issues which promote good governance.

At the end of the meeting, it is expected that the electorate will be armed with enough information to make informed and insightful choices during the 2016 election.

Discussants at the various meetings were of the opinion that this year’s presidential and parliamentary election was a contest of ideas and who could govern the country better, if given the opportunity by the voters.
