Give the youth leadership opportunities – YPN Ghana

It is time Ghanaians gave the teeming youth of the country opportunities in leadership, says the President of Young Professionals Network (YPN), Stephen Asiedu.

Asiedu says given that majority of the Ghanaian populace fall within the youthful age bracket, it is important that young people are given the opportunity to take up leadership roles.

“Ghana is a very youthful country with a lot of our population below 40. It is important that if we want to be democratic, then we should have more young people leading because democracy simply means a rule by the majority.”

Speaking in an interview, the young entrepreneur said if majority of the youth are not holding leadership roles, then Ghana cannot say it is fully democratic and urged parliamentarians who have had spells in parliament spanning three to four terms to step aside and support the youth by giving them guidance and pushing them to occupy those positions.

The former banker stressed on the need to have leadership succession plans where the combined leadership of the old and the young in the country is actively nurtured to ensure that there is seamless succession of leaders who have been well-groomed to play critical roles.

“It is important that we have a mix of the old people with good experience to lead and to carry along the young people, but it does not mean that we do not have to include the young people at all. Let us begin to afford younger people the opportunity to go to parliament and to be able to grow and groom them to become better leaders”, he said.

Mr. Asiedu’s comments come at a time the New Patriotic Party (NPP) heads to the polls to select 165 parliamentary candidates to contest parliamentary seats on the ticket of the party during the December 2020 general elections.

He disclosed that there are four members of the YPN who are contesting in the elections namely; Collins Owusu Amankwa, James Korsah-Brown, Collins Adomako-Mensah and Davis Opoku Ansah.

The YPN President wished the four well in their various contests.

The YPN is a network of young professionals that focuses on advocacy for youth empowerment and seeks avenues for young ones to unearth their talents as the future workforce of Ghana.
