Ghana’s renewable energy resource waiting to be tapped — CPP

Samia Nkrumah, CPP ChairpersonGhana has enormous renewable energy resource waiting to be tapped, provided the government will initiate bold actions, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has declared.

It has, therefore, called for the rejection of tariff increases on energy.

A statement issued in Accra by Nii Armah Akomfrah, Director of Communications of the party, said the tariff increases coming on the back of plans for yet more fuel price increases made it even more unacceptable.

As a country, the CPP said that  “we cannot continue to impose more and more hardships on an already impoverished population’’.

According to the party, the question all Ghanaians were asking was  “does the country need to increase electricity tariffs as a solution to our energy problem? We say a big  NO!’’ the statement stressed.

“The CPP,” the statement indicated “could solve the energy crisis, super energise the economy and create jobs in the process.”

The statement noted that the Volta river was the solution and that a CPP government would pursue it with haste since the party had the capability and had done the calculations.

He said, “it is a river that lies between two parallel mountain ranges and the unique topography of the area generates a wind corridor as a result of the globe turning at 6000mph and orbiting at 67000 mph”.

The statement pointed out that tidal waves peculiar to this area are induced by the winds in this corridor and simultaneously, the rain bearing clouds travelling westwards from the East are temporarily dispersed and regain their potential as they reach Central Region peaking in the Western Region.

“Thus, Ghana has most rains in the Western Region compared to the rest of the country. Installing wind turbines in this corridor will utilise the wind energy and consequently, reduce the wind force that induced the tidal waves around Ada and Keta”, the statement stressed.

It further said standard wind turbines, with average height 120 metres and diameter 85 metres would generate three mega watts of energy per unit because the wind corridor stretching from Ada to the north was over 1000km.

According to the party, studies had shown that it was the biggest and most reliable wind corridors in Africa and installing those turbines at a distance of 300 metres triangular should produce 9900 towers or 29,700 megawatts of energy.

He said given a wind outage of 66 per cent over the whole stretch of 1000km should guarantee 9000 mega watts of electricity at all times.

He said modern wind turbines (Tower/blade) were manufactured from fibre glass which could be produced from a reactivated Aboso Glass Factory (fibreglass is extracted from molten glass).

That, he said, would provide a large potential market for any investor willing to take part  in the reactivation of the Aboso Glass Factory, thus creating many jobs.

He explained that the factory would require less than two megawatts of electrical energy to cover the total needs of the factory.

The CPP stated that installation of wind turbines for power generation was becoming more popular all over the world.

According to the CPP, Colonel Jackson, a renowned Ghanaian inventor of international repute and a member of CTED,  UN Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate was presently working to patent a new type of wind turbine which is more efficient than the existing ones.

According to the statement, “Channelling the wind energy in the Volta Basin for electric power generation will help us kill two birds with one stone, minimise the menace of the tidal waves and increase our renewable energy resource.’’

The CPP said  the new renewable wind energy should phase out our thermal plants and also control the release of water from our hydropower stations into the sea to make more water available for irrigation.

‘’The enormous availability of this energy source will help us distill seawater directly for high quality salt production and also obtain fresh water from the sea for miscellaneous application,” the party noted.
