The Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Nezha Alaoui M’hammdi, has stated that Ghana’s unique history has committed her to good neighbourliness and the maintenance of peace and stability in the sub-region.
She says no wonder Ghana’s democratic governance is a confirmation of the maturity and entrenchment of her democratic culture.
She made the remarks at a reception in Accra to celebrate the 15th anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
According to Nezha M’hammdi, Ghana’s lead role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was an illustration of its commitment to maintain peace and stability in the sub-region.
International support
Nezha M’hammdi said Ghana had supported Moroccan candidates who competed for international positions and added that Morocco was currently representing Africa on the United Nations Council of Human Rights.
Morocco will represent Africa on the United Nations Council of Human Rights for the period between 2014 and 2016.
She lauded the government and people of Ghana for their efforts in protecting human rights. “Let us keep in mind that the commitment to protect human rights is strongly shared between Morocco and Ghana”, she said.
Investment in Ghana
She mentioned the construction of 10,000 social housing units, valued at 250 million euros, by a Moroccan company, ADDOHA Group, and the government of Ghana, as some investments made by Moroccan investors in Ghana.
To ensure that essential materials for the construction of the social housing units are produced locally, President John Dramani Mahama, on July 9, 2014, cut the sod for the construction of a 60-million-euro cement plant in Tema.
Cooperation between countries
For her part, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, commended the King and government of Morocco for their support in educating Ghanaians.
She particularly expressed her appreciation to the government of Morocco for granting scholarships to Ghanaians to study in Morocco.
Mrs Agyare added that the sponsorship packages offered by the government of Morocco would provide the necessary human resource for the country’s development.
According to Mrs Agyare, Ghana had benefitted from investments made by Moroccan investors and companies and reiterated government’s pledge to deepen its relationship with Morocco for the benefit of both countries.
The event was attended by some members of the diplomatic corps, ministers of state, government officials and some Moroccan citizens in Ghana.
