LPG calls for more consultative approach to media regulation
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) has expressed concern over the National Communications Authority's (NCA) recent enforcement action against some media entities operating without valid frequency authorisations.
While acknowledging the importance of regulatory compliance, the LPG believes a more constructive approach could have been taken to prevent job losses, especially during these challenging economic times.
“The media is a vital pillar of our democracy, providing a voice for the people and creating employment opportunities,” a statement issued by the General Secretary of the LPG, Jerry Owusu Appauh, said.
“The abrupt shutdown of these stations without thorough engagement and alternative solutions has put hardworking journalists and media workers at risk of unemployment,” the statement said.

Consultative approach
The LPG urged the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and the NCA to adopt a more consultative approach to regulatory enforcement.
“Instead of immediate shutdowns, the government should engage media houses, provide clear timelines for compliance, and explore flexible payment arrangements to ensure struggling businesses can meet their obligations without being forced to close,” it said.
The party sympathised with the affected media houses and their employees and encouraged them to engage with the NCA as well as explore measures to have their licences reinstated.
It said the LPG remained committed to advocating a regulatory environment that supports businesses while ensuring adherence to the law.
