FDA, Tobinco should resolve differences

A group committed to the ideals of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has observed with concern the ongoing impasse between the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and Tobinco Pharmaceuticals.

According to the NDC Progressives Coalition, “It is regrettable that the protracted misunderstanding between the food and drugs regulator and Tobinco has had unpleasant consequences for both FDA and Tobinco and most especially, the NDC government.”

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Alhassan Abdul Kadri, the group’s spokesperson.

The group of NDC members from diverse backgrounds whose objective is to help the NDC government deliver the better Ghana agenda to the people of Ghana and to ensure that the NDC wins the next election in 2016, pointed out that “As men and women on the ground, it is our observation that this standoff is beginning to hurt the government’s popularity.”

The group said it did not wish  to see this trend snowball, insisting that, “ It is in this respect that we wish to express our sincere gratitude to all and sundry who at one point or another intervened to have this issue resolved.”

It also applauded the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health’s prompt and timely response to the impasse and,  therefore,  appealed to the FDA  and Tobinco Pharmaceuticals to exercise restraint and allow the Parliamentary Select Committee’s intervention to yield positive results.

We also humbly appeal to the FDA to soften its hands a bit as they appear on the negotiation table, bearing in mind  the fact that the essence of regulation is to ensure compliance and not the collapse of businesses as is the unfortunate perception in the public eye, the statement added.

In making these appeals for magnanimity, the group also urged Tobinco to assume flexible, respectful and co-operative posture for the expeditious resolution of the matter.
