The Fanteakwa District Assembly in the Eastern Region mobilised GH¢281,461 as of June 30, 2014, out of a projected revenue of GH¢11,433, which represents 55 per cent of the estimated internally generated fund.
Within the same period last year, the assembly collected GH¢238,511.75 out of a projected revenue of GH¢468,565, representing 51 per cent.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Abass Fuseini Sbaabe, announced this at the second ordinary meeting this year at Begoro.
He attributed the improvement in the revenue generation to a number of measures put in place by the Finance Department of the assembly.
The measures included the establishment of revenue-paying points at Hemang, Nsutam, Dwenase, Abompe and Bosuso, which made it easier for rate payers to identify where to pay their rates; and effective supervision by stakeholder meetings at Begoro and Osino to educate rate payers on the need to pay tax.
Mr Sbaabe said the assembly would continue to equip the Finance Department to come out with innovative ways to generate more revenue for development.
“We also intend to explore other areas and invest in productive ventures to generate revenue to support our budget; we should all support the Finance Department to achieve this objective,” he stated.
The DCE said the assembly had received GH¢373,000 as first tranche allocation of the District Development Fund (DDF) based on the 2011 Functional and Organisational Assessment Tool (FOAT) under the DDF, adding that the amount represented 100 per cent of capacity building and 50 per cent of investment grant.
He said the assembly had taken delivery of all street-naming equipment supplied to metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, adding that the equipment had been installed and work had commenced earnestly.
The DCE stated that the assembly had agreed to hand over some public toilets in the district to the Ages Vision Investment Company Limited to convert them into biogas systems for the benefit of the district.
