EC re-registers additional 5263 'NHIS voters'

An additional 5,263 people were re-registered by the Electoral Commission at the end of the second phase of registration exercise for deleted ‘NHIS’ voters last Friday.

This brought the total number of re-registered ‘NHIS voters’ to 29,550, Head of Communications at the Electoral Commission, Mr Eric Dzakpasu has said.

The number represents 52 per cent of the total 56,772 that were deleted from the register following a directive by the Supreme Court in May 2016 that the EC should clean the voters register by deleting the names of persons who were registered unconstitutionally in 2012 with National Health Insurance (NHIS) cards – [NHIS voters]. 

The Court, in a unanimous decision, however, gave the chance to those who will be disenfranchised due to the new directive to be re-registered.

Following from that, the commission opened the register from July 18 to July 28, 2016 for the registration exercise but had to extend it from August 5 to 12 for a mop up following agitations that many were unable to do so during the first window.

At Efutu in the Central region, where the Member of Parliament, Mr Alexander Afenyo Markin had spearheaded an agitation for extension, 900 voters were re-registered.
