Don’t engage in divisive tendencies — Akufo-Addo

Nana Akufo-AddoNana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged members of the party agitating for him to lead the party into 2016 to remain calm, united and work to strengthen the party.
He urged them not to engage in divisive tendencies that would mar the enviable admiration the world had for the party, insisting that “after seven years of campaign, I need rest. I have to rest and commune with the Almighty God for the next line of action”.

Nana Akufo-Addo, who was reacting to calls on him to lead the party in 2016 at his Nima residence yesterday, noted that “I cannot forget some of these sentiments in my reflections”.

The groups included Greater Accra constituency chairmen, secretaries and some parliamentary candidates. Their spokespersons individually urged Nana Akufo-Addo not to abandon their call to stand.

Nana Akufo-Addo stated that it had not been easy travelling throughout the country over the last seven years campaigning and interacting with various groups and that as human as he was, it was just appropriate that he took some time off to rest.

Just after the Supreme Court had dismissed the 2012 election petition and declared President John Dramani Mahama as duly elected, Nana Akufo-Addo, the first petitioner, conceded defeat, called President Mahama to congratulate him and stated that he would not seek a review, a decision which received the blessings of the National Executive Council of the party.

Addressing the party members who had come to visit him, Nana Akufo-Addo said the party had once again proved to the world that “our commitment to peace and unity of this country cannot be doubted” and urged the members to “keep their eye on the ball”.

The icing on the cake was from the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Mr  Ishmael Ashitey. Speaking for the regional executive of the party, he urged Nana Akufo-Addo to “consider the humble plea. If you leave us midway it will not be well with us as a party”.

While he was making his presentation, others from the executives were just shouting, expressing their fear that if he decided not to stand they would not join the party.

Earlier, the national leader of the Tijania Muslim Council, Sheikh Abdul Faith Maikan, had led a delegation of imams to commend Akufo-Addo.
