Don’t be too interested in your welfare - Assembly members advised

A member of the Council of State, Nana Owusu-Nsiah, has advised assembly members to desist from being overly interested in their personal welfare at the expense of the constituents who voted for them.

According to him, as representatives of their electoral area, it was their utmost responsibility to bring to the fore the problems of their people for them to be addressed and not to champion activities that would serve their parochial interests.

“You are the mouthpiece of the people at the district assembly and you should at all times ensure that policies and programmes aimed at bettering the lives of the people are implemented and not ones that will personally benefit you,” he said.

Inauguration

Mr Owusu-Nsiah, who is a former Inspector General of Police, gave the advice when he inaugurated the Gomoa Central District Assembly.

Madam Beatrice Amedzi, the magistrate at the Gomoa Dawurampong District Court, swore the assembly members in at a ceremony held at the forecourt of the district assembly.

Mr Owusu-Nsiah mentioned that the people lacked a number of basic amenities and should therefore endeavour to trumpet such challenges to be addressed so as to bring relief to the ordinary people.

Unity is key

He implored them to eschew acts that had the tendency to break their front so that through unity they could work towards the transformation of the district for the ultimate benefit of all.

He noted that they, as ‘honourable’ members of the assembly, are not to lord it over the people but rather work with them towards tackling the challenges in their various electoral areas and further admonished them not to allow partisan politics to force them to take a stance that would not inure to the benefit of the district.

For his part, the District Chief Executive for Gomoa Central, Mr Benjamin Kojo Otoo, told the assembly members that their election and appointment marked the confidence people had in them and should therefore live up to the responsibilities associated with their new portfolio so as to justify the confidence reposed in them.
