Do not blame govt alone for nation's woes — Most Rev. Yaw Anokye

The Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Justice Gabriel Yaw Anokye, has challenged Ghanaians to desist from blaming the government alone for the current economic meltdown and the country’s current state of affairs.

He rather attributed the situation to politicians, people in leadership positions as well as those in the private sector finding every means possible to dip their hands into the public purse which in the long run leads to the general public suffering.

“The current situation whereby people are looking for wealth at all cost without thinking about the nation or the general populace is a big issue which cannot bring about peace and development in any country irrespective of who its leader is,” he said.

Most Rev. Anokye said this when he delivered the homily at a special thanksgiving mass to climax the Year of Faith anniversary at the Saint Peter’s Basilica in Kumasi.

Last year, Pope Emeritus Benedict declared the year 2012-2013 as the ‘Year of Faith’ which was being celebrated the world over by all Catholic faithful.

Catholics the world over, have since last year been celebrating the year of faith which has the theme: “The door of faith.”

“The rate at which selfishness was spreading among the Ghanaian populace was very alarming and if not checked or stopped could lead to very unfortunate consequences for the entire nation,” he said.

The archbishop lamented over the issue of corruption which was gradually becoming a normal practice in the life of Ghanaians to the extent that it was gradually eating into the church, and called for something to be done to check the canker.

There is the need for all religious people in the country especially Christians to let their religious beliefs reflect in their daily lives so that people could emulate such feats for total peace and development to prevail in the country.

Most Rev. Anokye also complained about the situation whereby people allowed money to blind them at the expense of their family’s moral values that make

Ghanaians unique people; this in the long run was destroying the life of the ordinary citizen in the country.

The archbishop urged Christians to be strong and maintain their faith by loving the word of God at all times to strengthen their faith in the lord.

The Vicar General of the archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Louis Tuffour, in his welcome address, thanked the entire faithful of the Catholic Church for their support and roles played during the entire year of faith but urged them not to relax in prayers but continue praying to God to continue to show his love and mercy to the entire nation.

He reminded the congregation to let the year of faith experience continue to linger on in their daily lives to bring a strong bonding between them and God Almighty at all times.
