CPP marks 70th anniversary

The Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Felix Amoah, has charged party faithful to close their ranks and mend unhealthy relationships in order to position the party for a meaningful performance in the 2020 polls.

According to him, unhealthy relationships in the past between party chairmen and their general secretaries, vice chairmen and other position holders, had contributed immensely to the disunity in the party.

He, therefore, reminded the party that until the factors that had worked against the party winning in past elections were addressed, the party would only continue to delude itself that “there is victory for us.”

Anniversary programme

Mr Amoah made the call at a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the CPP and also to relaunch the newspaper of the party.

The occasion was also used to auction current editions of The Convention newspaper, as well as handwritten notes of Dr Nkrumah while he was in prison.

Throwing more light on his call, Mr Amoah, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Nkrumah era, said he had noted unfortunately, “with great pain and dismay that these developments, have to a very considerable extent, affected the fortunes of the CPP in general elections, hence our abysmal performances within the past 23 years.”

Furthermore, he pointed out the realisation that discipline, comradeship and solidarity which were once the hallmarks of the party, were nowadays nothing to write home about.

“Everybody seems to be doing their own thing in the party and we either mindfully or unmindfully continue to elude ourselves into believing that there is still victory for us,” he stressed.

The way forward

He urged that “the victory that all of us have for the past 23 years been waiting for, will only come on the heels of hard work, discipline, effective organisation, comradeship, solidarity, inclusiveness, mutual respect and selfless devotion without which pillars the party will win elections only in the world that did not exist.”

He, therefore, admonished the rank and file of the party to start working immediately towards rebuilding the fortunes of the party.

“Comrades, let us all start from today to work assiduously to overcome the seemingly intractable problems and divisions within our great political family,” he said.

He paid tribute to all members of the party from the past to present who had made contributions to sustaining the life of the party and also asked that a minute’s silence be observed for the country’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Time to look back and unite

In her opening remarks, the acting Chairperson of the CPP, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim, recounted that there was the need to look back on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the CPP, how the party had gloriously united the Ghanaian people and led them in a tireless struggle that resulted in the attainment of independence.

“I am, therefore, issuing a clarion call to all of us to mobilise the entire CPP and in an even more confident stead, advance towards the goal of building a vibrant and prosperous party in all respects, and towards the goal of national rejuvenation,” she stressed.
