CPP expels Tano as he threatens court action
The acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Asani Tano, has been dismissed from the party.

This follows his wilful breach of Articles 13, 111, 121 and 124 of the party’s constitution which forbid members from campaigning for other political parties other than the CPP.
He is also accused of showing disrespect to the leadership of the party by describing them as corrupt.
According to the National Chairman of the CPP, Professor Edmund Delle, Mr Tano’s dismissal was based on the advice of the Central Committee at its meeting dated March 30, 2017.

“You are hereby informed of the cessation of your membership, consequently of any position held per article 17 (a)4.
Prof. Delle advised Mr Tano to, in his own interest, refrain from holding himself as a member or an officer of the party from March 30, 2017.
“We have had to act after your confirmation to wilfully breaching Articles 13, 111, 121 and 124 of the party’s constitution to which we are all subjects,” Prof. Delle is quoted as saying in the statement.
The national chairman asked the dismissed General Secretary to, in his own interest, return any party property, document or material in his possession which came under his custody as acting General Secretary.
Reaction
But in a swift reaction to his expulsion from the CPP, Mr Tano said his dismissal should be treated with the contempt it deserved, since the leadership itself violated the party’s constitution.
He explained that Article 82 (a) of the party’s constitution was clear on the dismissal of the party’s General Secretary, which should come from the National Executive Council (NEC) and not the Central Committee.
He said it was the NEC which should initiate the move by summoning the affected official to appear before a constituted Disciplinary Committee which then would have to send its report to the Central Committee for discussion.
Corrupt activities
Mr Tano described the claims made against him as “bogus and useless,” urging Ghanaians to disregard them.
He said he did not commit any offence, pointing out he only spoke publicly about the “corrupt activities” of the executive members of the CPP.
“They have breached all the provisions in the constitution,” he said and added that the party’s constitution should concern itself with the corrupt tendencies of the party’s leadership.
Mr Tano said he had spoken to his lawyers and they would react to the “claim” of his dismissal from the party. “They have no locus to restrict me from going to the party’s office,” he stressed.
