Compilation of voters register: NDP urges members to register

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, has urged members of the party to register in their numbers when the Electoral Commission (EC) begins the voter registration exercise.

He said not only should they register in their numbers but they should mobilise eligible voters to also do same so that no one would be disenfranchised in the 2020 election.

He made the call in an interview with the Daily Graphic yesterday.

No demonstrations

Alhaji Frimpong urged members of the party not to take part in any demonstrations or activity opposing the compilation of a new voters' register.

He said the NDP, which was a member of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), was interested in preserving the peace of the country and would not partake in any demonstration.

“The demonstrations are not necessary,” he stated.

EC convincing

Alhaji Frimpong said the EC had been convincing enough to warrant a new Biometric Voter Management System and the compilation of a new voters register.

He explained that the problem arose when the vendor of the current system wrote to the EC during the reign of Mrs Charlotte Osei that the system had reached its life’s end, hence the need to get a new system.

That, he said, triggered the process which would have been executed even under the Charlotte Osei-led EC.

The NDP general secretary said it would, therefore, be out of place for anyone to accuse the current leadership of the EC for doing the needful.

The EC’s decision to compile a new biometric voters register has generated some brouhaha, with the political parties divided over the move.

The Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voters Register (IPRAN), which includes the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says it will continue its demonstrations against the move.

The resistance has already organised three such actions, in Tamale, Kumasi and Accra, following what it described as its disappointment in the conduct of the EC after deliberations at the Coconut Grove Hotel at the instance of the EC’s Eminent Advisory Committee.

Some civil society groups have also issued statements opposing the compilation of a new biometric voters register.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and 12 other political parties are strongly backing the compilation of the new register.
