GES condemns Bawku SHS attack, warns culprits will face legal action

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of school property at Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region, stating that those responsible will face legal and disciplinary action.

The attack occurred on Monday, June 16, 2026, after some students reportedly became violent over the strict enforcement of examination regulations during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The incident left two teachers injured and damaged school property.

In a statement issued on June 17, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations of GES, Mr Daniel Fenyi, the Service described the attack as unacceptable and said such conduct was contrary to the values of discipline, respect and integrity promoted in schools.

GES said reports received indicated that the assault was linked to the enforcement of examination rules by invigilators during the WASSCE.

It added that attacks on teachers carrying out their official duties amounted to a serious breach of school discipline and threatened the safety of education staff.

The Service said security personnel had been deployed to the school and that teaching, learning and examination activities were continuing under increased security.

It added that the injured teachers were receiving medical treatment and the necessary support.

GES said it was working with the security agencies to investigate the incident and identify all those involved.

It said anyone found culpable would face the full rigours of the law in addition to disciplinary measures under GES regulations.
