Commemoration of Mills’s first anniversary unveiled

Late President JEA MillsThe planning committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to commemorate the one year anniversary of the passing on of former President John Evans Atta Mills has announced activities to mark the traditional first anniversary.

A statement issued last Monday, stated that the anniversary period would be observed from July 21 – 28, 2013.

The statement, signed by the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr Kofi Totobi Quakye, said a choral concert at the National Theatre, Accra is planned on Sunday, July 21 2013 to mark the birthday of the late President Atta Mills.

The first in the series of the Annual Atta-Mills Memorial Lectures at the Accra International Conference Centre is scheduled for Monday, July 22, 2013.

The statement said a remembrance ceremony at the Asomdwee Park to observe the exact date and time of the passing away of the late President, followed by the commencement of an International Hockey Gala at the Accra Hockey Pitch will take place on Wednesday, July, 24, 2013, while Muslim prayers would be held on Friday, July 26, 2013. On Saturday, July 27, 2013, a foundation-stone laying ceremony would take place in Cape Coast for the construction of the Atta Mills Memorial Research Library, which will be affiliated to the University of Cape Coast.

The statement said a non–denominational church service would be held at the Robert Mensah Stadium (Siwdu Park), Cape Coast on Sunday,July 28, 2013.

It added that a detailed programme for the respective events in Accra, Cape Coast, as well as Ekumfi would be issued in due course.

The statement said regional ministers, would in conjunction with municipal and district assemblies, organise activities to observe July 24, the day President John Evans Atta Mills passed on to glory.

It said in addition to other activities, they may organise others they deemed fit during the celebration period of July 21 to July 28, 2013.
