Big shots suffer casualties in Parliament

Some political heavy weights in parliament suffered defeats in the parliamentary elections as results continue to trickle in.

Key among them are members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who lost narrowly to members of the major opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Member of Parliament for Nabdam and Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr Moses Asaga, lost to a former Upper East Regional Minister in the NPP administration, Mr  Boniface Agambillah.

Former Minister of Information Mr John Tia Akologu lost the Talensi seat to Mr Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, the NPP candidate.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Mike Allen Hammah, lost the  Efutu seat to the NPP’s Alexander Afenyo-Markins.

The minister obtained 16,977 votes whilst Mr Afenyo-Markins polled 19,062 votes.

Mr Ambrose Dery, the Deputy Minority leader, lost the Nandom constituency seat to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Benjamin Kunbuor.

The NPP MP for Evalue-Gwira, Mrs Cathrine Afeku, is said to have lost the seat to the NDC's Kweku Tamekyi Kessie who polled 14,096 votes to win the seat. Mrs Afeku had 11,651 votes

The lone Convention People’s Party (CPP) Member of Parliamant for Jomoro, Samia Nkrumah lost her seat to the NDC.

The NDC MP for Jirapa Francis Bawaana Dakura has conceded defeat to the Independent Candidate, Paul Derigubaa. Mr Paul Derigubaa was defeated by Francis Bawaana Dakura in the NDC parliamentary primary.

Mr Baba Jamal, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, defeated Dr Kofi Asare of the NPP to win the Akwatia seat in the Eastern Region.

For the MP for Manya Krobo, Mr Michael Teye-Nyaunu, he lost the seat to Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlarbi of the NDC who is the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister.

Mr Teye-Nyaunu went Independent after he was defeated by Mr Terlarbi during the constituency primaries.
