Awoonor's death tragic — PPP

The Progressive People’s Party PPP) has learnt of the tragic death of Professor Kofi Awoonor, the former chairman of the Council of State in the Kenyan shooting incident.

In a statement, the party conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the great poet and academic.

It said while the party condemned the dastardly acts of terrorism by any group, the Kenyan shooting incident and similar attacks on the continent brought into sharp focus the threat to democracies and free societies in Africa from fundamentalist groups.

“The adoption of unorthodox means of seeking political, social and economic redress is real and present with us”, the statement added.

It urged all African governments to pay serious attention to the pockets of these terrorist threats and take immediate and practical measures to deal with social, political and economic exclusion, inequalities, unemployment, ignorance, poverty, diseases, unfair distribution of national wealth and corruption.
