A number of contestants in the ongoing constituency elections of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Atwima Nwabiagya North in the Ashanti Region have petitioned the National Executive (NEC) of the party to reorganise its elections.
In a petition signed by Mr Lambert Nchobire an aspirant, the petitioners alleged that the constituency election was characterised with “lots of foul play” which calls for a re-run.
The petition alleged that instead of balloting for positions on the ballot paper before voting, four contestants for the chairmanship were given numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 written on a piece of paper as their positions on the ballot paper.
It further alleged that there were a number of party members who cast their vote during the election who did not qualify to vote but “all that was overlooked by the leadership supervising and monitoring the election”.
The petition, therefore, appealed to the NEC of the NDC to, as a matter of urgency, consider a re-run of the elections.
The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr Raymond Tandoh, acknowledged receipt of the petition and said the regional office was patiently waiting for the decision of the NEC on the matter.
In the chairmanship contest, the incumbent, Joseph Osei Kwabena, secured 142 votes as against Dickson Sogah’s 74, Rufai Ahmed’s 61 and Lambert Nchobire’s 58.
