Assembly members ask President to reconsider MCE sack

Some assembly members of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly have asked President John Mahama to reconsider his decision to sack the metropolitan chief executive of Cape Coast, Mr Anthony Egyir Aikins.

The assembly members calling themselves the assembly members caucus of CCMA said Mr Agyir Aikins had worked hard over the years to open up the metropolis by ensuring the construction of roads in various parts of the metropolis.

Addressing a press conference in Cape Coast Tuesday, the assembly member for Esikafoanbantem/Antem electoral area, Mr James Buckman said the MCE’s dismissal was definitely going to retard the development of the metropolis.

He indicated that the assembly had over the years recorded unprecedented number of transfers of coordinating directors and chief executives.

This he noted retarded development and affected institutional memory which was necessary for sustained development.

He said it was unfortunate that Mr Egyir Aikins who recently returned from Chile after a training programme in local governance on the tax payers money, should be removed.

He named some persons he called "power brokers" who hailed from the Central Region to concentrate on their jobs as members of the Council of State and not to interfere in the local politics in Cape Coast.

Mr Buckman said the assembly members caucus of CCMA had evidence that the power struggle did not help the development of Cape Coast in any way but rather had delayed the construction of the Kotokuraba Market.

He said there were several false rumours concerning Mr Egyir Aikins and stated that the President should investigate to ascertain the truth of these rumours and reconsider his decision.

Mr Egyir Aikins was one of the 33 metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives directed to hand over to their respective regional ministers.
