Ashanti Region to get compost plant

 The plant will also separate plastic, metal and paper waste, with plastic waste going to feed a plant being established by the company in Accra to produce dustbins and other plastic materials.

The Ashanti Regional Manager of Zoomlion, Mr S. Gyekye-Darko, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Kumasi yesterday, said the company was determined to make a positive impact on the development of the country's agriculture.

Work on the construction of the first composting and sorting plant being constructed by the company at Adjen Kotoku near Accra has been completed.

The first batch of products is now undergoing testing in readiness for full-scale production.

Mr Gyekye-Darko indicated that the Adagya plant would have multiple benefits, including employment generation for people in the local community.

Besides, it would lead to an improvement in environmental sanitation, as Zoomlion would take care of the collection of refuse in communities to feed the facility.

The government has, over the years, been finding it difficult to meet the huge cost of refuse collection and the Adagya plant will come at the right time.

The regional manager emphasised the company’s resolve to continue to play a lead role in waste management in the country, especially in the cities and urban centres.

He rejected suggestions in certain circles in Kumasi that the city was dirty, arguing that people who passed those comments were not objective.

 “Any objective person who walks through the streets of the city will attest to the fact that Kumasi is neater now than it was in the past few years,” he said.

 He advised people against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
