Agona East presiding member election postponed again

The controversy surrounding the election of a new Presiding Member  of the Agona East District Assembly seems not to be over, and for the second time, the election has been postponed.

This time round, the election had to be suspended due to a purported letter written and signed for the acting President of the Agona Nsaba Traditional Council, Nana Oteng Kwabeng, Akyeamehene stating the traditional council’s rejection of the incumbent Presiding Member, Mr Samuel Richard Ziggah from contesting the PM election.

The said letter, a copy of which is in the possession of the Daily Graphic dated May 20, 2013, written to the District Electoral Officer and copied to the district chief  executive read that the chiefs and elders of  the Agona Nsaba Traditional Council rejected the filing of nomination to stand as Presiding Member for the second time by Mr Samuel Richard Ziggah.

It stated that the council wished to note that Mr Ziggah failed to meet with the chiefs and elders to discuss any developmental issues for the district since he assumed duty as the PM of the district assembly.

According to the letter, the council had no confidence in Mr Ziggah being the Presiding Member, hence their petition and therefore hoped that the district electoral officer could use his office to stop him from contesting the election.

Addressing the assembly members and heads of department who had filled the assembly hall for the election last Tuesday after meeting the traditional council, Mr Ziggah noted that the tone of the letter from the council showed that the council had a problem with him, hence the suspension of the election.

According to him, though the council had been duly invited to attend the election, they declined due to the issue  at stake.

He noted that he, together with the District Chief Executive, Mr Martin Luther Obeng and other officials,  went to meet the council to discuss its unwillingness to attend the election but they refused to rescind their decision.

He stressed that a meeting would be convened next week with the traditional council to resolve the impasse which would pave way for the election to be held.

He, however, noted that chiefs played a pivotal role in the administration of every district assembly and that he would collaborate with the council at all times for the progress of the district.
