Adopt innovative measures in revenue collection - MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of La Nkwantanang-Madina (LNMA), Mr Franklin P Anku, has urged members of zonal councils to adopt innovative measures in their revenue collections.

According to Mr Anku, 50 per cent of the assembly’s revenue would be transferred back to the councils, hence the need for hard work and innovative measures, saying “this implies that the more you collect, the bigger your receipt.”

The MCE made the remark during the inauguration of Madina and Oyarifa Zonal councils in Madina, near Accra, last Monday.

Zonal council

The district assemblies are empowered by the Local Government Act of 1993(Act 462) as the centre for local government in the country, as well as the basic unit of local government level development.

Advice to members

Mr Anku advised members of the council not to operate independently, but work as a team and support the assembly to address its development challenges.

“We need to remind ourselves that the operation and function of the council are delegated powers. The implication, therefore, is that you are answerable and accountable to the assembly, “he stated.

In its decision making, Mr Anku reminded the council to seek approval from the assembly. He added that ”the council is therefore prohibited from imposing or levying rates, but you may recommend for the assembly to impose special rates for specified projects or services on behalf of the council.”
