Abolish electoral college system in NDC - Asiedu Nketia

Asiedu NketiaThe General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for the abolition of the electoral college system used by the party to select  people for various positions in the party.

He rather proposed a universal system that would enable all members of the party across the country to elect their leaders instead of the current electoral college system which could be influenced.

Subsequently, he said the party was in the process of making biometric identity cards for all members of the party.

He said that the party aimed at generating  a biometric register which would be used for future elections in the party and granting of voting rights to the party members  to elect their leaders.

Mr Nketia made the remarks at the maiden Afari Kuta Memorial Lectures and National Cadres Awards Day organised by the United Cadres Front (UCF) of Ghana, a political branch of the NDC in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital last Wednesday.

It had the theme: "Towards Enhancing our Social Democratic Order - the Role of the Cadre".

The ceremony was also used to inaugurate the youth wing of the UCF, known as the Young Cadres League, and the launch of a new membership card and cadres’ newspaper; an official mouthpiece for the group.

Twenty-two members of the group, two each from the 11 regions of the UCF, including Tema, were honoured for their commitment and dedication in the past.  They were also presented with parcels and citations.

The event, which would be celebrated on June 19, every year, is to honour the memory of both departed and living cadres of the June 4 Uprising and the 31st December Revolution who lost their lives in the defence of the two processes that led Ghana to its current political dispensation.

Named after Afari Kuta, a cadre who lost his life on June 19, 1983, when in the company of his colleagues who confronted some reactionary forces, then known as dissidents led by the late Lance Corporal Alidu Giwah.

Afari Kuta was shot at Zongo Junction in Accra by the armed dissidents who aimed at destabilising the process.

Addressing the cadres, Mr Nketia said the party lost some parliamentary seats in the last general elections due to the electoral college system of selecting parliamentary candidates. He added that it was time to change to enable the right people to be elected into office.
