2014, blessed year if. . . — Most Rev Yaw Anokye

The year 2014 will be a very blessed year if all Ghanaians will be very prayerful, work very hard and be truthful in all their endeavours to attract God’s abundant blessing, the Most Reverend Gabriel Justice Yaw Anokye, the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Kumasi, has predicted.

He said irrespective of the management policies put in place by the government, without the support of God, nothing good would come out of any policies and strategies that would be implemented by the government.

In a New Year Message, he also appealed to all Ghanaians to desist from depending on the government and politicians at all times for the fulfilment of their development needs.

He explained that although it was the responsibility of the government to satisfy the infrastructure and other social needs of people, depending on the government and politicians alone was dangerous to the nation and called on corporate bodies and private individuals to complement government’s effort at developing the nation.

Most Rev. Anokye said “it was high time people of Ghana saw the need to learn to do things on their own and desist from over-depending on politicians and government for all their needs.”

He said there was the need for all religious groups in the country to pray for peace and development of the nation, since when God intervened in anything, there certainly would be great change and development.

The Archbishop lamented the recent passing into bill the Biosafety Act by Parliament, which he described as very unfortunate since it was done in a rush as the Genetically Modified Food is being investigated by countries all over the world.

Parliament should have done a little more research or consultations with the various stakeholders in the country before approving it, since it could have a negative effect on people and the agriculture sector in the country.

“There could have been a consultative body made of professionals in that field to study the issue of genetically modified food, among other issues,” he said.

“It is time people in leadership positions respected the opinion of the people they were leading by seeking their views on issues before taking decisions on their behalf”, he added.

The Metropolitan Archbishop also called for the strengthening of fraternity, since with good fraternity, it would be difficult to see people on their political, religious or ethnic background.

In a related development, the Chief of Amakom in Kumasi, Nana Adu Asare II, in a similar message, urged Ghanaians to work extra hard for the nation to develop well.

He said there was the need for more dedication and commitment to be shown by all, saying the current situation whereby people pretended to be working and took salaries at the end of every month was very bad and should be changed.

Nana Asare said for the nation’s development to move on smoothly, there was the need for all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to corruption in the country.
