WVG hailed for declining mortality rates in Sekyere East

The District Health Director of the Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region, Mrs Dorothy Afuakwa has hailed the management of World Vision Ghana (WVG) for helping the district reduce the rate of child mortality.

She says over the past two years, the district has not recorded any child mortality due to the capacity building and sensitization programmes WVG has instituted in collaboration with the district health directorate.

According to statistics released by the district health directorate, in 2015 the total delivery was 1,861 with only five deaths; In 2016, out of 2,044 deliveries only two deaths occurred; and from January 2017 till date, no death has been recorded out of 1,934 births.

Mrs Afuakwa said this when a team from the WVG visited the district to inspect some of its ongoing projects in the district.

The initiatives include helping pregnant women with easy access to health care and regular antenatal check-ups to avoid complications.

A series of programmes were also rolled out over the last two years to demystify tales associated with pregnancy and child-bearing with a clear emphasis on regular visits to the hospital and resorting to traditional birth attendants only as a last resort.

Mrs Afuakwa said the only functional CHPS compound in the district that serves Bomso and Feyiase with a population of 1,720 was built by WVG.

She applauded WVG for ensuring that the CHPS compound run a 24-hour OPD and maternity services as well as cater for emergency situations within the communities.

WVG has also rolled out a number of capacity building programmes for health workers in the district aim at sustaining the achievement.

She described WVG as a strategic partner helping to shape Ghana’s health delivery system and impacting societies.

The District Executive Officer for Sekyere East, Madam Mary Boatemaa Marfo commended WVG and urged it to continue to support government projects.
