The Tema General Hospital has stepped up public health education to create awareness among the populace in the Tema  metropolis.

As a result, health personnel from the hospital have started a door-to-door programme to render services including free medical screening  and health talks.

Speaking to the  Daily Graphic on  the programme, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr (Mrs ) Charity Sarpong, said beneficiaries would be taken through screening for hypertension and diabetes as well as talks on the causes of the diseases, their management  and prevention.

As part of the programme, staff of ECOBANK, Spintex Road branch, were screened and given talks on hypertension and diabetes .

Dr (Mrs) Charity Sarpong explained that it was the mandate of the hospital to deliver comprehensive healthcare to all of its clients hence the exercise to upgrade their knowledge on preventive care.

She said the health talk was to create awareness of the dangers posed by the disease if not checked and properly managed.

She noted that it was important for the general public to undertake regular and periodic medical examination.

Dr (Mrs) Sarpong emphasised that there was an increasing prevalence of diabetes in the world saying that ‘more than 80 per cent of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle income countries’.

She disclosed that  the World Health Organisation (WHO)  had projected that diabetes would be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.

Dr (Mrs) Sarpong urged people to maintain a healthy body weight, remain physically active, eat healthy food, reduce sugar and saturated fats, avoid smoking and excessive intake of alcohol .

She cautioned the old and young alike to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Dr (Mrs) Sarpong said the hospital would also take the programme to organisations that had assisted the hospital in diverse ways to help it deliver quality healthcare.
