The Rotary Club of Accra Airport District 9102 has presented 5,000 pairs of disposable gloves and 265 bottles of intravenous fluid and injections valued at GH¢2,200 to the La General Hospital.

The donation was in response to an SOS call by the hospital in the wake of the influx of cholera patients to the hospital, which has overstretched its facilities.

Currently, the hospital has recorded 701 cholera cases representing the highest so far in the Greater Accra Region.

Items needed

The hospital is in dire need of disposable gloves, disposable aprons, cannulas, wellington boots, mop buckets, liquid soap, IV fluid, hand sanitisers and bottled water.

Speaking after the presentation ceremony, the President of the Accra Airport District 9102 of the club, Mr Osei Kwame Agyeman, said the cholera outbreak in the region called for a concerted effort to curb its spread.

He said the items were presented based on the needs of the hospital after a discussion with its management.

Mr Agyeman announced that the club would follow up with another presentation next week, taking into consideration the list presented by the hospital.

All hands on deck

He said the huge numbers reported at the hospital clearly showed that the hospital alone would not be able to adequately cater for the needs of the patients, “and that is why we are responding to their request and hope others would follow suit.”

Receiving the items, the Senior Health Service Administrator at the hospital, Mr Philip Afeti Korto, said he was happy the club had donated disposable gloves, which were urgently needed to handle the cholera patients.

He said the disposable gloves were in high demand in the hospital since fresh gloves were needed in handling each patient.

Appeal

Mr Korto appealed to Ghanaians to adhere to hygienic practices to stem the spread of the disease, adding: “Cholera is treatable and people should not die because they  report to the hospital late.”

He, therefore, appealed to the public to report to the nearest hospital anytime a member started vomiting or passing watery stool and not to resort to self-medication.
